Why do I do what I do?.......

I was the first to ask. As soon as I came in contact with the clay, pieces like the ones you see came out. At first I was so much into the making that I didn’t realized what I was doing. I was having too much fun.

It was been part of an exhibit with the works of Diego Rivera, Posadas, Siqueiros, Orosco, Rufino Tamayo and others (Mexican very famous artists) that scared me. My work was very popular and complemented. I was offered a contract for five years from an art dealer with galleries in Canada, England and Switzerland. I could not believe it. It was already a lot for me to be in that show. So I started to search in my memories and I find that:

I was born and raised in Mexico. The area where I grew up is mined with undeveloped archeological sites. Since I was seven I always found these archeological figurines that I called “monos antigües” Many times I started collections that ended up been stolen by my friends. However, all of these has cultivated in me an extreme interest in archeology. As an adult, most of the books I have are about ancient cultures. I purposely go to bookstores to look for used books. But my fascination goes even beyond that. Very frequently I have dreams where I see myself excavating and finding these figurines. Every time is a different dream in a different location, but the sensation is always the same; so strong that takes me days to digest it.

Today those dreams and memories are taking real forms. I have started a new collection. Now I take any opportunity -when I go to Mexico- to go out and search for archeological sites for future excavations. .......This is why I do what I do.
